Control Engineering > Load and Control > LaC Tools
The Load & Control department is one of the key areas in shaping the products of tomorrow. In a strong cooperation with our internal product owner, we balance the trade-offs between power production and loading, ultimately leading to the most competitive new products introduced to the market. The main deliveries from the department are loading envelopes to other component groups as well as commercial power performance documentation directly supporting Vestas' position in the market. Another key delivery is the overall control strategy for the turbines, ensuring optimal operation of a highly dynamic system. Internally Load & Control (LaC) are organised in three departments: LaC Platform, LaC Technology and LaC Tools.

LaC Tools is focused on the ongoing development of the simulation tool-chain for our next generation of turbines, including pre- and post-processing of our data into useable formats. We have multiple ongoing R&D projects directly aimed at streamlining, accelerating and increasing the fidelity of our simulations. If you work on a project, you can often see it become reality in less than 2 years' time.


Responsibilities
Within our 18-strong LaC Tools department, you will be part of a smaller team of highly specialised and dedicated colleagues developing our in-house Vestas Turbine Simulation platform. This platform is used to calculate the loads and performance of Vestas products and is therefore one of the key elements of our wind turbine design process. This platform is used across Vestas to evaluate mechanical loads on our turbine designs, and to assist in the development of our turbine control systems.


Your specific role will be to support the development of our aero-elastic solver, with the nature of the work revolving primarily around the formulation and implementation of solutions for increasing fidelity, accuracy, and speed of our simulations, to meet the increasing challenges of larger and more complex wind turbine structures. You will be expected to drive these activities by identifying, engaging with and managing stakeholders at multiple levels of our organisation.


Qualifications
You have:

  • A M.Sc. or Ph.D. within engineering, physics, computer science or related fields
  • Minimum combined 7 years relevant experience within:
  • Development of engineering simulation software platforms like:
  • Aero-elastic simulators (e.g. FAST, HAWC, Flex5), CFD, FEA, multi-domain modeling
  • Analytical and numerical modelling of dynamic mechanical systems
  • Thorough understanding of Software Development processes
  • Knowledge of feedback control of dynamic systems
  • Business and/or Project Management education is a plus

Competencies
The ideal candidate has the motivation, capacity and understanding to grasp how the control and structural dynamics of the turbine interact, to dive into the underlying physics, and has the creativity to come up with new and innovative solutions to the challenges we face in simulating these systems. To be successful in the position we expect that you:

  • are committed to pushing the state-of-the art in wind turbine simulation technology
  • like to work with complex engineering problems and have a creative approach to new challenges
  • take pride in initiating and driving technology development projects through a large organisation
  • succeed as part of a team and that it comes naturally for you to collaborate and share knowledge
  • are pro-active, result oriented and have a strong sense of responsibility
  • have good communication skills and are fluent in English (speaking and writing)
