We are looking for a Cell Biologist who will be responsible for developing 3D human cell cultures for investigations of bacterial infections. The position will be placed at the main hospital in Denmark Rigshospitalet (RH), Copenhagen.

The proposed start date of this position is December 1, 2022 or as soon as possible. The position will be for 2 years with a possible extension.

The research in the Infection Microbiology Group at RH/DTU Biosustain covers bacterial phenotypes associated with one of the most urgent challenges in our society – antibiotic resistance undermining effective treatment of human bacterial infections. In the Infection Microbiology Group, headed by Professor Helle Krogh Johansen, Rigshospitalet and Professor Søren Molin, DTU, you will be working with a common aim towards bridging the gap between academic biomedicine projects and their clinical applications. We aim at establishing and integrating a workflow, from synthetic and systems biology through genomic engineering, multi-omic data generation from bench-scale infection models, and comparisons with clinical investigations of infected patients. The Group has a total staff of approx. 15 employees, comprising a highly motivated team of engineers, scientists, clinicians, and students to tackle this challenging task. Important focus points of the project are to elucidate host/microbe interactions and responses to fluctuating environmental conditions in a newly developed miniature organ infection model (‘organoids’) and in air liquid interface cell cultures (‘ALI’) from multi-omics and bioprocess data analysis, and design of strategies for identifying and testing biomarkers for improved clinical diagnostics as well as the action of new and old types of antibiotics.

Responsibilities and tasks
You will be responsible for standardizing and optimizing our cell culture based laboratory infection model using lung organoids and ALI cultures, and for developing improved infection models, which can accommodate immune system components, complex microbial communities, and various tests antibiotics and other interfering agents. You will also be responsible for supervision and assistance in projects involving other group members.

Qualifications
Candidates should have a PhD degree in the field of cell biology. Experimental experience in cell biology is essential. We are looking for a candidate with an expertise in:

  • detailed knowledge in cell biology
  • expertise within mammalian cell cultivation
  • experience with experimental cell biology: isolation and differentiation of primary and stem cells
  • standard cell/molecular biology techniques (immunostaining, PCR, RNA and protein expression, flow cytometry)
In addition, you must

  • enjoy working with complex topics
  • thrive on collaboration/teamwork with a focus on the process as well as the outcome
  • believe in dialogue and feedback as the best foundation for sound decision-making

Salary and terms of employment

The Centre of Diagnostic Investigation comprises a collection of highly specialized departments: Diagnostic radiology, clinical biochemistry, pathology, clinical immunology, clinical physiology/nuclearmedicine and PET, clinical microbiology, clinical genetics, center of genomic medicine.

The center has a staff of 1.800 and an annual turnover of 1.1 billion kroner. The center produces annually 10 mill. laboratory analyses and performs 650.000 image diagnostics based on 1 mill. contacts with patients and donors.

The core task is high-level research, strong educational environments, customized diagnostics and patient treatment. 35 professors and other researchers provides annually more than 700 scientific articles in international reputable journals.
