Postdoc in computer simulations - Dynamics of liquids and solids

Department of Science and Environment, Roskilde University invites applications for a position as a Postdoc of Physics from October 1, 2019 or soon thereafter. The position is for a period of two years.

Description of the project
Funded by the VILLUM Foundation for the period 2017-2023, the Matter project is an integrated part of the Glass and Time center (www.glass.ruc.dk) at Roskilde University’s Department of Science and Environment. Glass and Time is characterized by strong collaboration between experiment, simulation, and theory. The purpose of Matter is to understand the fundamental governing principles of structure and dynamics of liquids and solids, with main focus on investigating and further developing the isomorph theory (but also other activities like, e.g., physical aging).

We are looking for a talented postdoc, who will be closely working with Prof. Jeppe Dyre, the director of Matter.

The focus of the simulation group is on:

  • Using high-performance GPU computing, based on own software, www.rumd.org
  • Close collaboration between experiment, simulation, and theory, catalyzed by weekly 2-hour joint group meetings.

Responsibilities and tasks
Your main task will be to conduct research related to the field of dynamics of liquids and solids as a member of the simulation part of the Glass and Time group. In addition, some teaching obligations can be expected (max 20% of your time). You will be part of the scientific staff and as such expected to participate in the departmental and group-related activities.

Qualifications
The following qualifications are required
  • Ph.D. degree in Physics or a related field
  • Extensive experience with MD computer simulations, preferably within the areas of liquids, glasses, and soft matter. The preferred applicant has demonstrated expertise in software development.
  • Good written and oral English language skills

We are looking for an ambitious, curious and open-minded person with good communication skills, a person who is visible, involved participant in the group’s as well as the department’s daily activities.

Terms of employment
The employment is on full time, 37 hours per week and formally, you will refer to Head of Department, Susanne Sørensen.

The position will be filled according to the Agreement between the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations (AC) and Job Structure for Academic Staff at Universities.

After the deadline for applications the Head of Department will shortlist applicants for assessment with assistance from the recruitment committee including the chairperson of the assessment committee.

Shortly after the application deadline all applicants will be notified whether or not their application has been selected for assessment.

The shortlisted applicants will be informed about the composition of the assessment committee, and each applicant will be given the opportunity to comment on the composition of the committee and - later on - their assessment.

Once the recruitment process is completed, all applicants will be informed of the outcome of their application.

    The application should describe a project for the 2-year period relating to the research at Glass and Time, which may involve developing and testing the isomorph theoretical framework. One possibility (but not the only one) is that the project relates to:
    1. numerical studies of physical aging in simple glass-forming model systems, or:
    2. studying numerically the relation between the physics of simple liquids and their computational complexity. A detailed project description is not required; the 1-2 page cover letter is regarded as the “project description”.
