We are seeking applicants for a 3-year postdoc in optical sensor development to join us at Department of Bioscience, Aarhus University. The applicant will work in a research project funded by the Independent Research Fund Denmark aiming at developing advanced optical ammonia sensors for water quality monitoring in aquaculture and/or water treatment.

The position is available from 1.11.2019 or as soon as possible thereafter.

Job description
You are expected to contribute to the development and validation of an optical ammonia sensor. The final sensor system will combine a fluorescent receptor molecule within a matrix, an optical read-out unit and a user interface. The goal is to measure ammonia reliably in harsh environments including aquaculture and wastewater treatment facilities. The position includes laboratory work as well as field-testing.

Your profile
Applicants should hold a PhD in Chemistry, Environmental science or alike. The ideal candidate has a strong background in optical chemo- or bio-sensor development. Ideally, the candidate can demonstrate experience in developing stand-alone sensor systems including their analytical evaluation. Besides a solid chemical background, experience in data analysis and programming will be highly appreciated. It is expected that the applicant has experience in publishing scientific results in leading journals within the fields of chemistry or environmental science.

Additionally it is important that the candidate can work well within interdisciplinary teams and has a high level of self-motivation. Previous teaching experience will be appreciated, but is not necessary.

Fluent communication in English both in written and spoken language is essential and is expected by any suitable candidate.

Who we are
The sensor laboratory is a part of the Department of Bioscience and the Aarhus University Centre for Water Technology (WATEC). Within the sensor laboratory, we work on developing novel sensor solutions for environmental monitoring. Both electrochemical sensors as well as optical sensors are developed and applied. Currently the team consists of one Professor, an Assistant Professor (project leader of this project), two postdocs, two technicians and several students. It is our mission to develop sensors that can be applied in complex and harsh environments, this means that we are going into the field to test our new sensors where they are supposed to be used.

Application procedure
Shortlisting is used. This means that after the deadline for applications – and with the assistance from the assessment committee chairman, and the appointment committee if necessary, – the head of department selects the candidates to be evaluated. All applicants will be notified whether or not their applications have been sent to an expert assessment committee for evaluation. The selected applicants will be informed about the composition of the committee, and each applicant is given the opportunity to comment on the part of the assessment that concerns him/her self. Formalities and salary range
Science and Technology refers to the Ministerial Order on the Appointment of Academic Staff at Danish Universities under the Danish Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation.

The application must be in English and include a curriculum vitae, degree certificate, a complete list of publications, a statement of future research plans and information about research activities, teaching portfolio and verified information on previous teaching experience (if any). Appointment shall be in accordance with the collective labour agreement between the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. Salary depends on seniority as agreed between the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Confederation of Professional Associations.
