The Department of Biomedicine at Faculty of Health at Aarhus University invites applications for a position as Postdoc in the field of molecular pharmacology of cannabinoids in stress-related psychiatric disorders as per 1 April 2021 or as soon as possible thereafter. The position is a fixed-term full-time position (2 years) with possibility of extension.

We offer a vibrant international research environment where English is the preferred language in the laboratory, at meetings and at seminars. The Department employs some 450 people and covers a range of research areas within Biomedicine. We contribute to the Bachelor’s degree programs in medicine, molecular medicine, odontology and the Master’s degree programs in biomedical engineering and medical chemistry. Our infrastructure is well developed with modern laboratories, core and animal facilities. You will work either in the brand new ‘Skou Building’ or similar as we are in the process of modernizing our old facilities. You can read more about the department here and about the faculty here.

We are interested in a highly motivated and talented postdoctoral researcher with a successful PhD degree and outstanding experience in the area of cannabinoid pharmacology, molecular biology, animal models of psychiatric disorders, as well as a good background in neuroinflammation and behavioral phenotyping. The candidate will develop a research project aimed at identifying the molecular mechanisms and the neurocircuitry involved in the behavioral and neuroplastic effects induced by cannabidiol and other fast-acting antidepressant drugs. Apart from this main project, it is expected that the postdoctoral research candidate will participate in other projects of the group, including the investigation of the mechanisms and therapeutic potential of cannabinoids in treatment-resistant depression and depression-associated comorbidities (e.g. anxiety, chronic pain).

Your job responsibilities
As Postdoc in the Department of Biomedicine your position is primarily research-based but may also involve teaching assignments. You will contribute to the development of the department through research of high international quality. In your daily work, you will work closely with colleagues on your project, where you will receive supervision and guidance.

Your main tasks will consist of:

  • Independent research of high international quality, including publication.
  • Investigate drug-receptor pharmacology of cannabinoids both in vitro (cell cultures) and in vivo (animal models)
  • Establish and independently develop experiments modeling different aspects of stress-induced psychiatric disorders and associated comorbidities.
  • Investigate gene expression, protein levels in the brain (qPCR, ELISA, WB, transcriptome and proteome analysis)
  • Analyze brain morphology and neurocircuitry (golgi-staining and sholl analysis, immunofluorescence)
  • Actively involve in project application and scientific writing
  • Assist supervision of PhDs and other students
  • Involve in teaching in the area of pharmacology

You will report to the Associate Professor Sâmia Joca.

Your competences
You have academic qualifications at PhD level, preferably within one or more of the following areas cannabinoid pharmacology, molecular biology and animal models of psychiatric disorders. Experience with animal models of pain will be considered an advantage. As a person, you are ambitious, take ownership and possess good communication and interpersonal skills. We expect you to be fluent in oral and written English.
In order to be assessed as qualified for a Postdoc position, you must meet these academic criteria.

Shortlisting will be used.
