The Department of Biomedicine at Faculty of Health at Aarhus University invites applications for a position as Postdoc in the field of muscle cell biology and protein turnover as per 1 April 2023 or as soon as possible thereafter (starting date is negotiable). The position is a fixed-term full-time position for 3 years.

The Department of Biomedicine prioritises diversity and a vibrant work environment, as this is a prerequisite for ground-breaking research. About the research project

The research project investigates functions of E3 ubiquitin ligases for the development of motor neurons and skeletal muscles, as well as their specialized interface, the neuromuscular junction. E3 ligases are enzymes of the ubiquitin proteasome system that modify substrate proteins with the small ubiquitin protein. Depending on the type of modification (e.g. mono- vs. poly-ubiquitylation), ubiquitylated substrates may be funnelled to the proteasome for degradation, or may be subjected to other fates in the cell (e.g. subcellular targeting, cellular signalling). Of specific interest are roles played by cullin-3 based E3 ubiquitin ligases, their associated binding partners, and substrates. The project also seeks to uncover links of cullin-3 E3 ligase dysfunction to the development of neuromuscular diseases.

Your job responsibilities

As Postdoc in muscle cell biology and protein turnover, your position is primarily research-based but may also involve teaching assignments. You will contribute to the development of the department through research of high international quality. In your daily work, you will work closely with colleagues on your project, where you will receive supervision and guidance.

Your main tasks will consist of:

  • Independent research of high international quality, including publication and grant applications.
  • Support of ongoing research projects in the laboratory.
  • Help in the supervision of at least one PhD student or junior scientist in the lab.
  • Help in the organization of the laboratory and relevant meetings.
  • Present our work at national and international meetings, conferences, or workshops.
  • You may also be asked to support teaching activities.
You will report to Dr. Stephan Lange, and the Head of Department for Biomedicine.

Your competences

You have academic qualifications at PhD level, preferably within one or more of the following areas: Biomedical Research, Genetics, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Cell Biology, Muscle Physiology and/or Bioinformatics. Expertise in muscle physiology (e.g. treadmill running of rodents, twitch parameter analysis), spatial transcriptomics and/or other NGS techniques, cell biology (cell culture of satellite cells, immunofluorescence, imaging) and biochemistry (standard RNA, DNA and protein analyses, proteomics) is advantageous. Experience with animal work (rodent models) is desirable.

As a person, you are ambitious, take ownership and possess good communication and interpersonal skills. We expect you to be fluent in oral and written English.
