A PhD position is available in the Protein Glycoscience and Biotechnology group, Protein Chemistry and Enzyme Technology section, Department of Biotechnology and Biomedicine. One research focus area of this group, headed by Prof. Maher Abou Hachem, is the discovery and biotechnological applications of oxidoreductases. https://scholar.google.com/citations?hl=en&user=gmYG5G0AAAAJ&view_op=list_works&sortby=pubdate

The PhD research project is a collaboration with the lab of Jean Guy Berrin (INRA, Aix-Marseille University Marseille, France), who are leading experts in fungal bioamss active enzymes. The project goal the discovery and engineering of carbohydrate active flavo-oxidoreductases for applications within biomass processing.

Responsibilities and qualifications

  • Based on sequence analyses, select new flavo-enzyme candidates for expression, enzymatic and electrochemical characterisation
  • Determine the crystal structures of relevant enzymes and combine with bioinformatics to decode their mode of action
  • Rational engineering of selected enzymes and evaluation of the engineered variants
  • Scientific, dissemination and collaboration activities related to the project
  • Take part in teaching and supervision within protein chemistry and enzymology

You must have a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master's degree.

Desired candidate academic and personal profile:
  • An outstanding academic record with a strong background in chemistry, biochemistry, enzymology or related study fields is critical
  • Previous experience in oxidoreductase chemistry, electrochemistry, carbohydrate analytical techniques are good merits
  • A basic background in bioinformatics and/or structural biology is a good asset
  • Independent and self-driven
  • Very ambitious and hard-working
  • Passionate about research and enjoys a relaxed informal work environment

The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidate will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes at DTU. Salary and appointment terms
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union. The period of employment is 3 years.
