The Section for Materials and Surface Engineering at the Department of Mechanical Engineering of the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) performs research in the field of materials science and engineering involving theoretical, experimental and numerical approaches. The research is multi-disciplinary and includes aspects of physics, mechanics, chemistry and manufacturing technology. The Section works on three broad themes: materials design and surface engineering, microstructure evolution and phase transformations, materials performance and degradation.

We invite applications for a 3-year PhD position in the field of medium and high entropy alloys to work on a project, where the goal is to produce alloys with tailored combinations of strength and ductility. The position is funded by the Independent Research Fund Denmark, with the PhD scholarship starting in spring 2020.

Responsibilities and tasks

As a PhD student you will conduct practical experimental work and modelling. The experimental work will include casting, thermomechanical treatments, mechanical testing and microstructure characterization using electron microscopy and synchrotron experiments. You will be responsible for conducting these experiments and making correlations between the measured microstructural parameters and the mechanical behavior of your alloys. The experimental investigations will be accompanied by crystal plasticity modelling to understand the interplay between dislocation slip and mechanical twinning. You will use the knowledge obtained to optimize mechanical properties.

Qualifications

Candidates should have a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master's degree.

We are interested in applicants with a strong background in metallurgy and crystallography, who have knowledge of electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction and mechanical testing. The applicants should be able to carefully plan and conduct experiments. Experience in computer programming and data analysis is an advantage. Excellent communication skills in English (both writing and speaking) are essential.

The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidate will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes at DTU. Salary and appointment terms

The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union. The period of employment is 3 years.

The department has a scientific staff of about 135 persons, 100 PhD students and a technical/administrative support staff of about 80 persons.
