The Computer Science Department at IT University of Copenhagen (ITU) invites highly motivated individuals to apply for several fully funded PhD positions in Natural Language Processing for projects supervised by Associate Professor Barbara Plank. The ideal starting date is summer 2020.

The projects
The PhD candidates will focus on cutting-edge research within Natural Language Processing on using deep learning to tackle one of the most fundamental open challenges in Natural Language Understanding: to robustly handle multiple dimensions of language shifts (languages, domains, genre etc.) The aim is to devise new algorithms to learn cross-lingually, under domain shift and under minimal guidance with applications to dependency parsing and information extraction in broad and specific domains.

If you are passionate about core natural language processing tasks (dependency parsing or information extraction), the problem of language variety in NLP, and you are interested in methods from transfer learning and weak supervision, including multi-task learning, transfer, continual learning, cross-lingual learning, domain adaptation and active learning, these positions might be for you.

The PhD positions are fully funded by two Independent Research Fund Denmark (DFF) grants led by Barbara Plank (MultiVaLUe: DFF sapere aude grant and MultiSkill: DFF thematic grant). The positions include research stays at NLP partners in Northern Europe.

The PhDs are expected to focus on subprojects, which should be indicated at submission time: Subproject 1 (Cross-lingual cross-domain dependency parsing), Subproject 2 (Cross-domain relation extraction), Subproject 3 (Transfer learning for low-resource information extraction for job market analysis).

The ideal candidate:

  • Has a strong background in computer science, mathematics, natural language processing or computational linguistics
  • Has prior experience with machine learning for natural language understanding
  • Is motivated and enthusiastic about carrying out research in the core challenges in Natural Language Processing amongst which learning from limited data and transferring knowledge across conditions
  • Holds a MSc in Computer Science, Mathematics, Computational Linguistics, Computer Engineering or Machine Learning or similar (or submits a statement signed by the supervisor with the expected delivery time for the MSc)
  • Candidates with a strong ML background but limited prior NLP experience will also be considered
  • For subproject 3, speaking or reading a Germanic language is a plus.
Research environment
The successful PhD applicants will join Barbara’s lab at the Computer Science department at ITU (http://bplank.github.io). The Computer Science department at ITU is a strong, highly international institution (https://en.itu.dk/research/departments/computer-science-department). The PhD students will be part of the PhD School at ITU.

The campus is located at the south-eastern part of Copenhagen on Amager. It is close to the beach and several nature parks. Copenhagen is a vibrant city.

We aim at building a diverse team. All applications are welcome, especially those from members of underrepresented groups are encouraged.

Job tasks
The purpose of the PhD positions is research training leading to a successful completion of a PhD degree. The tasks include amongst others:

  • To carry out research on the project
  • To publish scientific papers and present them at international venues
  • To attend courses for academic development and assist in teaching
  • To collaborate with international project partners via a research stay
  • To finalize the research training by writing and completing a PhD dissertation.
Qualification Requirements
The following qualifications are required:

  • 3 year programme: candidates should have an MSc (or equivalent)
Application
The application must be in English and must include:

  • A cover letter (max. 3 pages in total) explaining why you are interested in the PhD position--indicating which subproject(s)--and how your profile fits the position. The cover letter should outline a research plan for the position (max. 1 page);
  • Documentation of academic degree(s) including grade transcripts that documents outstanding academic achievement;
  • Curriculum Vitae, which must include two professional/academic references.
The application may also include:

  • Relevant scientific publications written by the applicant, if applicable;
  • A copy of the Master's thesis (or working draft);
  • Letters of recommendation.
Applications without the above-mentioned required documents will not be assessed.

It is understood that even highly qualified applicants will satisfy these requirements to varying degrees, for example because of differences in publication cultures in various research fields.

Early contact with our faculty staff is strongly encouraged.
