The Danish Center for HADAL Research at the University of Southern Denmark is offering a three-year PhD position to study the microbial diversity of seafloor sediments in the hadal zone, the deepest oceanic realm. The incoming PhD student will explore hadal microbial communities by addressing questions about how the extreme conditions in the hadal environment shape microbial genomes, which microbes degrade organic matter in hadal sediments, how unique hadal microbial communities are compared to shallower communities and what role viruses play for the function of microbes in these environments. The research will be conducted using bioinformatic tools, but may include laboratory, experimental and field work, and the joining international research expeditions.
The candidate should have a background in data science, bioinformatics, environmental microbiology, molecular biology, biogeochemistry, or a related field, and have strong analytical skills, an aptitude for computational work. The candidate should be able to work independently in coordination with an open and dynamic research team. The PhD student will join a diverse and international group of scientists in the HADAL Center and have the opportunity to collaborate with a strong network of scientists both within and outside of Denmark.
Deadline: 15 April 2023
