Department of Anaesthesia, Pain and Respiratory Support, Neuroscience Centre, Rigshospitalet invites applications for a PhD position to be started as soon as possible after formal acceptance as a PhD student at the university (expected March/April 2022). The position is funded for 3 years from enrollment and the applicant must have a background as a nurse. It is a precondition for employment that the applicant must prepare, submit and have enrollment at Copenhagen University accepted.

The overall title of the project is Chronic non-cancer pain issues in Denmark: epidemiological aspects, prevention and intervention.

Chronic non-cancer pain (CNCP) is detrimental for both the affected individuals and society. An increasing CNCP prevalence reaching 26.8% of the Danish population and a long waiting time for public multidisciplinary pain treatment are points of concern. These numbers reveal the actual necessity of incisive measures not only to manage treatment of the affected population, but also to implement preventive actions. This project addresses key issues for the purpose of clarifying CNCP risk factors/consequences and testing preventive and pre-clinical interventions, based on current evidence regarding mechanisms for the development and maintenance of chronic pain and contains three work packages (WP). Overall results will inform patients and healthcare providers regarding interventions to improve well-being and prevent further loss of functioning among patient referred for multidisciplinary pain treatment.

We are inviting applications for WP 2:  Pre-habilitation interventions to empower patients with chronic pain. Here we wish to test interventions to empower patients waiting for multidisciplinary pain treatment, which will support pain self-management.

WP 2 is an RCT, which will test the effects of an educational video-based pain program and a single session cognitive-behavioral program to support self-management through increased pain literacy and skills-training. The overall PhD study is based on the hypothesis that educational and cognitive-behavioural interventions may help to reduce deleterious effects of pain on some areas of patients life. The object is to test two different interventions Empowered Relief Program (ERP) and Video-based pain program (VPP) to help patients to self-manage their pain and avoid worsening in the pre-clinical period. It will include an adaption of ERP and VPP to a Danish context in cooperation with psychologists and including a pilot test. This will be followed by a randomized controlled trial (RCT) for application and assessment of the two interventions. Patients waiting for multidisciplinary pain treatment at the Multidisciplinary Pain Center, Rigshospitalet will be recruited.
