The BARC Center for Basic Algorithms Research Copenhagen (barc.ku.dk) is seeking a PhD student,
to be employed at IT University of Copenhagen (ITU).

BARC is a leading center for fundamental algorithmic research, headed by VILLUM Investigator Mikkel
Thorup. BARC’s core researchers at ITU, and possible supervisors for the PhD student, are Rasmus
Pagh and Thore Husfeldt. The aim of BARC is to attract top talent from around the world to an
ambitious, creative, collaborative, and fun environment using the power of mathematics we strive to
create fundamental breakthroughs in algorithmic thinking. The ideal candidate will have proven their
potential through one or more of: 1) an outstanding MSc thesis, 2) publishing in leading international
venues for algorithms theory, or 3) successful participation in international competitions in informatics
or mathematics.

The position is for 3 or 4 years depending on previous studies, with starting date in late summer or
early fall of 2018. Financing for BARC is split between UCPH and ITU, and positions are to be filled at

Qualification Requirements
The following qualifications are required:

  • 3 year programme: candidates should have an MSc (or equivalent) in computer science or mathematics
  • 4 year programme: candidates should have a BSc in computer science or mathematics
Application
The application must be in English and must include:

  • A cover letter;
  • A statement of purpose, which provides evidence of independent thinking, novelty and originality, and a state of the art grasp of the targeted research field matching the project description above;
  • Documentation of academic degree(s); grade transcripts that documents outstanding academic achievement;
  • Curriculum Vitae, which must include two professional/academic references;
  • Applications may also include a relevant scientific publication written by the applicant, or the applicants master thesis. Letters of recommendation can also be included in the application
It is understood that even highly qualified applicants will satisfy these requirements to varying
degrees, for example because of differences in publication cultures in various research fields.

General information
The IT University of Copenhagen (ITU) is a teaching and research-based tertiary institution
concerned with information technology (IT) and the opportunities it offers. The IT University has more
than 70 full-time Faculty members. Research and teaching in information technology span all
academic activities which involve computers including computer science, information and media
sciences, humanities and social sciences, business impact and the commercialisation of IT.

Successful applicants will be employed and enrolled at the ITU University for a period of 3 or 4 years
depending on the university degree level of the applicant.

Salary
Appointment and salary will be in accordance with the Ministry of Finance’s agreement with the
Danish Confederation of Professional Associations (AC).

Technology and Innovation of 25 April 2008.
