Microscale testing and characterization of composite materials and imaging

We seek a flexible, open-minded and self-motivating person to work in the field of microscale characterization of composite materials

The job
Wind turbine rotor blades are made of composite materials. The increasing size of new turbine blades put increasing demands of the mechanical properties of composite materials. There is therefore an ongoing development of new composite materials with improved properties. It is acknowledged that the macroscale mechanical properties to a large extend are controlled by properties of fibre, matrix and the fibre/matrix interface, i.e., microscale parameters. Therefore, measurement of mechanical properties at the microscale is a central area for the development of future composites. We aim to strengthen our capabilities in microscale testing and characterization by hiring a development engineer in the Section of Composites Analysis and Mechanics in the Wind Turbine Materials and Structures Division.

Primary areas of responsibilities:

  • Responsible for an environmental scanning electron microscope (Zeiss EVO 60)
  • Responsible for microscale mechanical loading devices
  • Data analysis from mechanical testing
  • Responsible for single point impact fatigue tester
  • Data analysis of rain erosion
  • Use of X-ray tomography, optical and scanning electron
  • Design and maintenance of control electronics
  • Design of test set-ups with camera, infrared camera, high speed camera, video, etc.
  • Image analysis (e.g., digital image correlation, DIC)
  • Collaboration and innovation with industry
  • Writing technical reports and contribute to manuscripts for scientific journals (in English)
  • Taking part in the formulation of new research projects contribute to education and supervision of students

Our expectations of you
The candidates should have a M.Sc. degree in a relevant research field and will be evaluated according to the following criteria:
  • Documented experience in the area of characterisation of materials by e.g. optical and scanning electron microscopy, X-ray tomography
  • Ability to work independently, to plan and carry out complicated tasks, and to be a part of a dynamic research team (e.g., interaction with research technicians)
  • Good communication skills in English, both written and spoken

Since we aim for very high quality in our work, you should work very carefully and be willing to constantly improve.

What we offer in return
The successful candidate will join the The Section of Composites Analysis and Mechanics of the Department of Wind Energy. The position will involve experimental work in the mechanical test lab and the Large-Scale Facility (for wind turbine blade test). The position will be close related to other type of experimental characterization of composite materials in the section as well as other sections in the Department.

We offer an interesting and challenging job in an international atmosphere with the focus on research, teaching, innovation and scientific advice for the benefit of the surrounding community. We place emphasis on a high level of professionalism among our staff, so skills development is an integral part of our organization. We offer a great flexibility in the position. There is a large degree of self-management. There are good opportunities for professional and personal development as well as opportunities for influence and responsibility. DTU is a family-friendly workplace with flexible working hours and an informal working environment. In the area of technical and natural sciences, DTU is one of the leading research and education institutions in Europe.

Salary and appointment terms
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union.

Application and contact
Please submit your online application no later than 31 August 2021 (Danish time). Open the 'Apply online' link, fill out the form and attach your motivated application, CV and exam certificates.
