SDU Robotics, part of the Maersk Mc-Kinney Moller Institute, University of Southern Denmark, currently has open positions at the level of assistant professor in computer vision and deep machine learning with a focus on medical imaging applications.

The candidates will be integrated into the section SDU Robotics (robotics.sdu.dk), located in Odense, which is at the core of the Odense Robotics Cluster /involving 120+ startups and established companies in robotics. The section is involved in a variety of national and European projects and features a strong network of academic and industrial partners. We solve challenging research problems from real applications and implement novel robot solutions together with end users such as Universal Robots, LEGO, national hospitals, and Novo Nordisk.

We are a team of currently ca. 55 employees, specializing in robot solutions involving modelling, simulation, and control of advanced robot technologies (systems and services) for industrial, medical, and welfare applications. We value teamwork, professional diligence, enthusiasm for robotics, and the drive to adopt new skills and extended responsibilities. Job description
The position has a focus on classification, segmentation, and detection of pathology in 2D and 3D medical images within domains such as radiology, ophthalmology, and clinical pathology, with the goal of developing systems for clinical decision support.    

The main duties and responsibilities include:

  • Research in collaboration with colleagues from SDU Robotics,
  • Participation in ongoing and future research projects,
  • Teaching within computer vision and deep learning for medical applications,
  • Fundraising for and management of research projects,
  • Publishing academic journals as well as engagement in other forms of research dissemination.

Profile and requirements

The positions require a PhD degree in the areas of computer vision, medical image analysis, deep learning or similar, and we expect the candidates to fulfill most of the following requirements:

  • Experience in methods related to facilitating the programming of advanced image recognition tasks within medical and clinical applications.
  • Experience in collaborative projects with partners in health care or medicine aimed at implementing research results for real applications.
  • Experience in programming in Python in developing software for AI-supported medical image analysis tasks.
  • Experience in creating explainable AI models to facilitate interpretation by medical experts and patients.
  • Experience in working with sensitive data such as medical images and records.
  • Experience in creating dashboards and visualizations for communicating results. to collaborators.
  • Experience in disseminating research in journals and conferences in medical as well as technical domains.
  • Expert knowledge of using machine learning and deep learning frameworks such as TensorFlow and Pytorch.

 

The candidates will participate in activities of the SDU Robotics section including current and future research projects and teaching activities. This involves for example:

  • To be able to collaborate with our experts in the further development of our core technologies.
  • To participate in the practicalities of actual research on medical or clinical applications including publishing, dissemination, and securing funding.
  • To be deeply involved in our regular coordination and joint evolvement of research and project activities.
  • To organize, plan, and conduct excellent teaching for undergraduate and graduate courses and independently supervise project courses, and BSc, MSc and PhD theses.

Furthermore, the successful candidates:

  • Have excellent knowledge of English (written and spoken).
  • Are able to work well in interdisciplinary team.
  • Have the ability of working independently.
  • Have a strong sense of responsibility.

Conditions of employment
The assistant professor positions are for a 3-year period and are available per 01.01.2024 or as soon as possible thereafter. Main work location is Odense/Denmark at SDU.

Employment as an assistant professor requires scientific qualifications at PhD level. Employment as an assistant professor is a temporary position and will cease without further notice at the end of the period.
