The successful candidate will be part of the EU-funded H2020 project “Tipping Points of the Earth System” (TiPES), and is hired for 4 years to work as the scientific project manager of the TiPES project and will spend remaining time on observation-based analysis of tipping points in ice cores.

The TiPES Project
Several subsystems of the Earth may respond abruptly at critical future levels of anthropogenic forcing, which have been associated with tipping points (TPs). It is paramount to identify safe operating spaces in terms of these critical forcing levels in order to prevent harmful transitions to alternative, undesirable states of the Earth and its subsystems. The mechanisms leading to abrupt climate transitions are only partly understood, and reliable warning signals for forthcoming transitions are urgently needed. TiPES addresses these questions in a joint effort of 18 European institutions, combining paleoclimatology, time-series analysis, Earth-system modelling of past and future climates, applied mathematics and dynamical system theory, as well as decision theory.

Qualifications
Required qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in physics, geophysics, glaciology, geosciences or a related field.
  • Experience in scientific management of a large scientific international collaboration. Preferably in the EU system.
  • Excellent English language skills.
  • Excellent knowledge of ice-core data and the methods used to analyze these.
  • Thorough understanding of the climate system and knowledge of tipping points within the climate system.
Dissemination and/or teaching skills is an advantage.

Detailed task description
The successful candidate will be instrumental in WP 8 and WP 9 of the TiPES project which focuses on the project management. The work will include reporting TiPES findings and progress to the EU, dissemination of TiPES outcome and organization of day-to-day interactions within the TiPES project. This includes regular meetings and internet conferences involving all participants, and monthly scientific seminars including oral progress reporting. Maintenance of this activity is the responsibility of the successful candidate.
Further the candidate will synthesize and synchronize paleoclimate ice-core records evidencing abrupt transitions using statistical tools, specifically by creating ice-core datasets that also contain uncertainty estimates on both dating and proxies.

Conditions of employment
Starting date will be 01.09.2019 and the position lasts 4 years.

The position is covered by the Memorandum on Job Structure for Academic Staff.

Terms of appointment and payment accord to the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and The Danish Confederation of Professional Associations on Academics in the State.

The starting salary is currently up to DKK 426.625 including annual supplement (+ pension up to DKK 72.952). Negotiation for salary supplement is possible.
