Applications are invited for a one-year postdoctoral scientist position to develop and apply solid-state NMR approaches for characterization of cement materials exposed to carbonation. The starting date for the position is March 1st, 2023 or as soon as possible after this date. The place of work is the Department of Chemistry, Langelandsgade 140, 8000 Aarhus C and the position is associated with the Laboratory for Solid-State NMR of Inorganic Materials.

Carbonation of cementitious materials is an important process which influences durability and may be actively used to sequester carbon dioxide from point sources such as the exhaust gas from power plants. Carbonation can also be used to heal cracks in concrete, for example by introduction of backterial endospores in the cement formulations which produce carbon dioxide upon contact with water. For this approach our current research focusses on development of self-healing cement which can operate under oilwell conditions.

We seek a highly motivated candidate with a PhD degree in chemistry, materials science, nanoscience or similar and documented experience in research on cementitious materials and materials characterization at the microstructural level. The applicant must have a strong expertise in solid-state NMR spectroscopy and its applications in inorganic chemistry, preferentially cement chemistry or in studies of aluminosilicate  systems. Moreover, the candidate should have ability to work and collaborate in a group, to develop new ideas, and to write and communicate in English. Post Doctoral experience in materials research using solid-state NMR spectroscopy will be considered as a plus.

The application must include a curriculum vitae, PhD degree certificate, and a description of previous relevant merits. The application should include the names and e-mail addresses of one to three people who can provide a letter of reference. All highly motivated candidates are encouraged to apply, regardless of their personal background. Equal consideration will be given to all qualified applicants independent of their gender, race, and cultural background.

The Department of Chemistry at Aarhus University is one of the leading European chemistry departments with a broad research portfolio. It has a permanent staff of ~35 full, associate and assistant professors, a support-staff of ~30 people, ~100 PhD-students and ~50 postdocs and around 400 students. In addition to excellence in research, teaching and supervision, The Department of Chemistry values equal opportunities, a collegial atmosphere, and a student-friendly mindset. The application deadline is December 14th, 2022.

For further information on the position, please contact Professor Jørgen Skibsted (jskib@chem.au.dk).

Application procedure

Shortlisting is used. This means that after the deadline for applications – and with the assistance from the assessment committee chairman, and the appointment committee if necessary, – the head of department selects the candidates to be evaluated. All applicants will be notified whether or not their applications have been sent to an expert assessment committee for evaluation. The selected applicants will be informed about the composition of the committee, and each applicant is given the opportunity to comment on the part of the assessment that concerns him/her self. Once the recruitment process is completed a final letter of rejection is sent to the deselected applicants.

Letter of reference

If you want a referee to upload a letter of reference on your behalf, please state the referee’s contact information when you submit your application. We strongly recommend that you make an agreement with the person in question before you enter the referee’s contact information, and that you ensure that the referee has enough time to write the letter of reference before the application deadline. Unfortunately, it is not possible to ensure that letters of reference received after the application deadline will be taken into consideration.
